Our new paper describing redlistr has been published! redlistr is an R package that aims to help users apply the guidelines provided by the IUCN consistently, ensuring the reliability of the assessment results. It is aimed towards researchers and conservation practitioners in NGOs and governments with a diverse levels of experience when it comes to risk assessments and programming.
Redlistr has several functionalities, including helping users calculate spatial metrics required for red listing. Using spatial data, such as shapefiles or rasters, Redlistr can help users calculate the Area of Occupancy (AOO) and the Extent of Occurrence (EOO) of a species’ or ecosystem’s distribution with confidence. It also calculates rates of change of species population or ecosystem area using equations recommended within both Red List guidelines. These values can subsequently be used to estimate area or populations in the past or future. Using redlistr allows users to set up a clearly defined pipeline, making consistent repeat assessments easy.
In our paper, we also describe some common types of mistakes that often arise when assessments are done. We then provide ways that redlistr can help minimise these mistakes. The paper also comes with a supplementary that includes two full working examples demonstrating the capabilities of redlistr that users can follow as tutorials.
Redlistr is freely available both on the Comprehensive R Archive Network (CRAN) and on the Tool section of the IUCN RLE website. Finally, redlistr will continually be maintained and developed by us, and we would appreciate any suggestions you might have for us through our GitHub page.
